Who approves my application?
Animal Ethics Committees
All new animal ethics applications (and any subsequent amendments) must be reviewed and approved by an Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) before work can start. There are four AECs responsible for approving and monitoring animal based research at the University. They meet every 4-6 weeks, and deadlines for application submission are 10 working days prior to a meeting. Administration of the application process is conducted by the Animal Ethics group within the Melbourne Research Office.
Each AEC includes representatives from veterinary science, research and teaching, animal welfare and the general public, and makes decisions on a consensus basis. Due to this composition applications should be written with a non-scientific audience in mind. The work of AECs is overseen by an overarching Animal Welfare Committee which reviews University policy as it relates to research and teaching using animals.
