Keeping a biological inventory
This material is presented for information only. These internal programs are yet to be launched. Further details will be provided closer to the launch date.
University policy requires that each research group maintains a list of the biological agents (bacteria, viruses and samples that might reasonable be expected to contain bacteria or viruses) that it handles, uses or stores. The level of detail required should be dictated by a risk assessment. For example, the list would not need to contain details of every clone in a clone library, because it is likely that each individual clone carries the same level of risk. Similarly, a Salmonella reference collection may not need to include the details of each strain, because the risk is likely to be the same for each isolate. Different procedures apply for biological agents that belong to different risk groups, as defined in AS/NZS 2243.3.Risk group 1 agents
- must be included on the research group register/inventory
- must be included on the research group register/inventory
- a new acquisition must be reported to your Department using this form, prior to commencement of work with that agent
- each Department will report any changes to the Risk Group 2 list it controls to the Research Office on an annual basis
- must be included on the research group register/inventory
- must be reported to the Research Office, and project approval granted, before work can commence
- the University does not have any facilities that meet PC4 containment requirements, and as such, risk group 4 agents must not be used. Contact Denise Cappai for further advice should it be required.
