Overview
Visiting Scholar Awards are designed to assist scholars from leading overseas universities/researc institutions to visit the University of Melbourne for periods of two to six months to engage in collaborative research and/or engage in major curriculum development or knowledge transfer.
Eligibility
- Visiting Scholars should be academics (or research institute staff) already receiving full or part salary at their home institution.
- The visit may be for a period of not less than two (2) months and up to a maximum of six (6) months.
Please note: only ONE application per round will be considered from each University of Melbourne investigator. Applicants who submit multiple applications will have all applications removed from the assessment process.
Applicants must agree in writing (on the application form) to the Conditions of Award 2008. Please note the conditions relating to Intellectual Property.
Funding
Funding is provided by the University of Melbourne Planning and Budget Committee through the Research and Research Training Committee, plus a special allocation by the DVC(International).
The central funding contribution is $2,000 per month. This must be matched by a cash and/or in-kind contribution by the host University of Melbourne department.

Assessment Criteria
In assessing applications the Academic Panel will take into account:- The quality of the proposed collaboration on campus (and especially the depth of the intellectual collaboration and the benefits to the University research group/department)
- The strength of the existing or developing collaboration
- The likelihood that assistance will contribute to further collaboration
- The potential to enhance the links between the University of Melbourne and the overseas university or research institution
- Whether the overseas institution has a formal Agreement for Academic Cooperation and Exchange with the University of Melbourne or is a Member of Universitas 21.
- And specifically for the funds available under the International Engagement Strategy
- Whether the project will help develop new strategic relationships in emerging regions of importance to the university (for 2007-2008 these regions will be Latin America, Africa, Indian sub-continent and the Middle East).
Application Form
- Applicants should complete the Visiting Scholar Award Application Form 2008. Applicants are also required to enter their application into Themis Submissions. Please attach the application documents in one attachment.
- The application must have the full support of the University of Melbourne Head of Department. A letter, signed by the Head of Department, must be attached. The letter should state the benefits of the visit in relation to the Department’s research program. (Refer to Section 9.2 of the Application Form.)
Lodgement
One signed, complete (single-sided, unstapled) application should be submitted to The Secretary, Visiting Scholar Awards, Melbourne Research Office, Level 5, 161 Barry Street (cnr Grattan Street) on or before the due date.

Conditions of Award
Applicants and collaborators must read and agree to the Conditions of Award prior to applying.
Reporting Requirements
Chief investigators must provide a final report on the research project (activities and outcomes) within the following respective time-frames:-
- Round 1: no later than 31 Dec. 2008
- Round 2: no later than 30 June 2009
Reports must be endorsed by the Head of Department and forwarded to the Melbourne Research Office. Refer to the Conditions of Award for details. Use the Collaborative Grant Report Form.
