Codes of conduct
University Code of Conduct for Research
The cornerstone of research integrity at Melbourne is the University Code of Conduct for Research (Regulation 17.1R8, ‘the Code’). The Code prescribes standards of responsible and ethical conduct expected of all persons (academic staff, students, technical and other support staff) engaged in research at the University. The Code obliges all University researchers to be aware of the ethical framework governing research at the University, and comply with institutional and regulatory requirements. University policy mandates that all researchers familiarise themselves with this Code and ensure that its provisions are observed. Failure to comply may be a ground for disciplinary action.
Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research
The University of Melbourne and its staff and students are also bound by the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research. Developed jointly by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the Australian Research Council (ARC) and Universities Australia, the Code has broad relevance across all research disciplines, guiding institutions and researchers in responsible research practices. It explains how institutions and researchers should:- Manage breaches of the Code and allegations of research misconduct (including the responsibilities and rights of researchers if they witness research misconduct)
- Maintain research data and materials
- Publish and disseminate research findings, including proper attribution of authorship
- Conduct effective peer review
- Manage conflicts of interest
