Academic Leadership
At the University level the prime responsibility for academic
leadership in research lies with Professor Peter Rathjen, Deputy Vice-Chancellor
(Research) supported by Professor Lyn Yates, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) (0.5).
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) is responsible for overseeing research
management at the University, in particular coordinating the development and
implementation of research policies, improving the support mechanisms for
research, establishing strategic inter-institutional linkages, and promoting
University research capacity and outcomes to government, industry and the
general community.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Graduate Research) Professor Dick Strugnell, as academic head of the School of Graduate Research,
has responsibility for overseeing postgraduate activities and for developing an
increased capacity for the University to deliver research training and other
postgraduate programmes of the highest quality.
At the faculty level, Deans, Associate Deans
(Research), Associate Deans (Graduate Studies) and Heads of Academic
Department provide crucial leadership in research and research training,
supported by Centre directors, senior staff and postgraduate coordinators.
- Academic Support Services
The major research services
support group at the University of Melbourne is the Melbourne Research Office.
Its major academic service partners are:
Major roles centrally are also played by Human Resources (including assistance with
selection and recruitment of research personnel; advice on the terms and
conditions of employment, and employee relations; payroll); Financial Operations
(incl. financial management and accounting services
in respect of research funds; fulfilling the University’s financial reporting
obligations to government and funding bodies); Melbourne Scholarships Office
(incl. scholarship payments; administration of the Melbourne Scholarships
Program); and the University Planning Office (incl. coordination of reporting to
DEEWR; coordination of performance reporting to Council).
There are a number of joint planning and consultative groups designed to ensure effective coordination and delivery of research services. These include the Associate Deans and Research Managers' Forum, the Research Management Roundtable, the Research and Commercialisation Services Group, the R&RT Executive Committee and the RO-Financial Operations Monthly Roundtable.
There are also special interest groups such as the Publication Coordinators network, HEAG Administrators and the Melbourne Network of Research Grant and Contract Administrators.
Research Office Brochure Series
The Research Office produces information brochures on a wide variety of topics for academic staff, research students and research administrators. These are generally distributed to staff through faculties and departments. Copies are available from the Research Office (contact: Nadia Pugielli, tel: 8344 2000). PDFs are available on the brochures webpage.
Key University Plans
National Research Priorities
It is important that researchers are familiar with the National Research
Priorities (NRPs) and the priority goals, not least as many government agencies,
incl. e.g. the ARC, ask applicants to relate their work to the Priorities, each
agency has to show that is fostering an appropriate level of work in these
areas, and some schemes explicitly include relevance to the NRPs in their
selection criteria.
The four NRPs and their associated priority goals are set out at:
DEEWR National Research Priorities
Details of the enhanced framework are available from the DEEWR web site at
