Melbourne ResearchResearch Grants and Contracts

Research Collaboration Grants

Funding body University of Melbourne (UoM)
Status Closed
Key dates

Applications due to Faculties: Friday 5 June 2009

Applications due to the Research Office: Friday 19 June 2009

Aim of scheme

Funding will be provided to researchers to stimulate and facilitate collaboration with external organisations. Applicants must submit an ARC Linkage grant application within two years of receipt of the award. The Linkage application should result specifically from the research activities pursued under the Research Collaboration Grant. The generation of new research income at an equivalent level from contract research would also be an acceptable outcome. External organisations are not required to provide funding, but are expected to endorse the collaborative project and participate actively in it.

  1. It is usually expected that projects should be completed within a year. Applicants may re-apply for a second year of funding for the same project if they produce written evidence of satisfactory progress with their first grant and good reasons as to why a second year of funding should be granted. These applications for a second year of funding will be judged competitively against all other applications for this round and there is no guarantee of an additional year of funding.
  2. Successful applicants will be expected to lodge an ARC Linkage grant application within two years of award of the grant, or seek an equivalent level of support directly from other external sources, eg. via a research contract. New research income sought by the University is expected to be >$100,000 over the lifetime of the project.
  3. No matching funding from faculties is required for Research Collaboration Grants. However, endorsement of the application must be received from the Head of Department and Dean.
  4. Similar endorsement must be obtained from the Chief Executive Officer or delegate of the external collaborating organisation.
  5. Faculties will be required to rank applications if more than one is submitted for a particular round.
Funding
Grants of up to $20,000 are provided for one year.
Selection criteria
  1. Academic merit of the proposal, including its likelihood of leading to a competitive application for funding within 2 years (50%)
  2. Track record of applicant(s) relative to opportunity (25%)
  3. Demonstrated commitment of the collaborating organisation(s) to be involved in the project and, in the longer term, to be a Partner Organisation(s) in a future Linkage application (25%)
If applications are considered to be of equal merit, preference will be given to Early Career Researchers and to projects that include a research partner institution that has not previously contributed to university research.

Applications for renewal of existing awards will be assessed competitively with applications in the current round on the basis of the above selection criteria. Renewal applications should include a copy of the original application and a progress report. Applications that do not include a progress report will not be considered.
Selection process
Faculties will be required to rank applications before submission to the Research Office. Applications will then be short-listed by the Committee and submitted to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) for approval.

Only applications that have been endorsed by Heads of Department and Deans will be considered by the Committee. Similar endorsement must be obtained from the Chief Executive Officer or delegate of external organisations collaborating on the project. This is to ensure that the Heads, Deans and CEOs are aware of, and have agreed to, the proposed research.
