Aim of Scheme

The McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme has been established to attract outstanding recent doctoral graduates to the university in areas of research priority for the university and its faculties, and in particular to recruit new researchers who have the potential to build and lead cross-disciplinary collaborative research activities inside and across faculties. The University offers a leading and lively research environment located in an environment that is internationally engaged, public-spirited, and with many outstanding areas of research strength.

The objectives of the scheme are to:

  • Assist the University to build an ambitious program of research activity
  • Attract outstanding postdoctoral researchers to be part of that and to begin to build the next generation of research activity
Further Information
The McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended for applicants who are not currently studying or employed at the University of Melbourne
  • Applicants may be drawn from any field in which the University of Melbourne has research strength, but must have an ability to contribute to new emerging research collaborations and programs across faculties or disciplines
  • Applicants will require a supporting statement from an existing faculty in which they would be located if successful, but the criteria for selection will be university-based and judged on demonstrated talent and achievement and the ability to make a substantial contribution to an already nominated or an emerging program of university research priority
  • Two categories of award will be made. The Program is primarily intended for applicants who have recently completed or are about to complete their PhD, and the bulk of awards will be for fellows in this category. A small number of awards will be made to outstanding applicants who have completed already a first period of post-doctoral experience. Assessment in both cases will take account of achievement relative to opportunity
Funding
The majority of awards are intended for immediate post-doctoral fellowships, to be taken up within one year of completion of the doctorate. Fellows will be employed at Level A.6 in the University Salary Band (currently $65,368 plus 9% superannuation). In addition, each year a small number of awards may be made to fellows who have already undertaken a first period of postdoctoral experience, and who will be employed at Level B.1 in the University Salary Band (currently $73,863 plus 9% superannuation). Awards will be for a maximum of 3 years.

The Fellowships will be funded by Melbourne Research to the value of a Level A academic salary including on costs. All Fellows will receive an additional $15,000 to be spent on travel and/or equipment over the term of their Fellowship.

Grants will be awarded for three years commencing 1 January 2010 but start date may be deferred up to 30 June 2010.
