NHMRC budgets
Do not use or submit the University Budget Form. The format for the grant budget is specified in NHMRC instructions for applicants.
Project Grants, Partnership Grants, Development Grants, Strategic Awards
Personnel:
- To request salaries you must use the most appropriate of the six levels of the NHMRC Personnel Support Package (PSP).
- Justify the PSP level requested in terms of the work/position requirements you need to undertake the project. Do not justify why the person you have nominated is at that salary level.
- Although the NHMRC Packages are intended to cover salary on-costs, in reality there will often be a funding short-fall which will need to be met from other sources. The University of Melbourne Salary Costing Tables will help you determine the full cost of appointments at the University of Melbourne.
Direct Research Costs usually need to be requested in quanta of $5,000.
Indirect costs do not need to be requested. NHMRC grants are listed on the Australian Competitive Grants Register so the University receives infrastructure funding through the Research Infrastructure Block Grant (RIBG).
Research Fellowships, Career Development Awards, Training Fellowships
- Fellowships are awarded as “packages” to employing institutions. Expenditure is expected to contribute to salary and all salary on-costs (payroll tax, workers compensation, superannuation etc).
- Successful applicants will need to negotiate with their Head of Department regarding use of the package (level of salary, on-costs etc). Depending on the level at which the fellow is appointed, the full cost may need to be met from other sources.
- Generally, NHMRC fellows cannot hold other full-time paid fellowships in addition to their NHMRC award. Fellows should refer to the relevant scheme Funding Policy for details.
